UMass Boston Holds Grand Opening for New Coffee Shop in the ISC Café
The grand opening of Recreo Brew & Bagel welcomed faculty, staff, and students to experience the new café and celebrate a partnership that highlights the university’s values.
“This is more than just the opening of a new coffee place on campus,” said Diane D'Arrigo, assistant vice chancellor for campus services. “It's the beginning of a partnership, rooted in community, sustainability, and culture.”
Recreo Brew & Bagel is run by Miriam and Hector Morales, who also own Recreo Coffee & Roasterie in West Roxbury. The Moraleses roast coffee beans grown on Miriam’s family farm, which has been in operation for over five decades in Jinotega, Nicaragua. By sourcing directly from the farm, the Moraleses have complete control so they are able to deliver consistently wonderful coffee directly from their farm to your cup.
“The farm has been in my family for more than 50 years,” Miriam Morales said. "Nicaragua has gone through very strong trials over the last decades, so for my parents to have a vibrant farm of coffee hasn't been easy.”
For UMass Boston, the partnership brings an educational opportunity as well. The story behind Recreo Coffee provides a real life example of how cultural heritage and entrepreneurship can intersect.
“This partnership aligns with UMass Boston's values and strategic plan,” said D'Arrigo. “Connection with community, diversity, inclusion, and global perspectives are at the heart of who we are and all that we do, and Recreo fits right in.”
“It's really a dream come true to see the community, mission, and product be treasured,” said Miriam.
Recreo Brew & Bagel is now open serving coffee roasted from the Morales family farm, along with fresh bagels and pastries. They are located on the first floor of the Integrated Sciences Complex, open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
