Before being inducted into the RockGodz Hall of Fame in Hollywood, California on Thursday, guitar legend and Lowell native Gary Hoey coached the 21 members of UMass Boston’s Pop/Rock Ensemble. This year 194 graduates of Boston Public Schools and new UMass Boston freshmen received the Boston City Scholarship, and many of them received additional merit scholarships. Interim Chancellor Barry Mills, BPS alumna and Honors College junior Sonia Chien, and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh congratulated our newest scholarship recipients during a reception on Monday. Fakisha Fabre, a student in the Master’s in Public Administration Program in the McCormack Graduate School, is the 2017 "29 Who Shine" award winner from the University of Massachusetts Boston. To receive the award, students must be Massachusetts residents graduating from one of the 29 state universities and community colleges who plan to continue living and working in the state after graduation. Winners plan to pursue a career in a needed field in the commonwealth, work at a startup, or take on a community service role.
