UMass Boston’s Online School Counseling Master’s Program Named Best Hybrid Program in Country

OnlineMasters.com has named UMass Boston’s online master’s program in school counseling the best hybrid program in the country.

The educational research organization gave UMass Boston this special distinction because although distance learners can complete most of the coursework online, they come to campus during the first summer for a two-week intensive program where they meet their classmates and instructors.

“The remainder of the coursework is completed online among the same cohort of students, allowing for students to form deep and long-lasting friendships,” said Amy Cook, the graduate program director of the School Counseling Program and an assistant professor of counseling and psychology. “Although students come to campus once for coursework, many hail from close and afar to reconvene one last time at the graduate commencement ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments.”

OnlineMasters.com has ranked UMass Boston’s program No. 4 overall on the Best Online Master's in School Counseling Programs for 2019. Programs were ranked based upon curriculum quality, program flexibility, affordability, and graduate outcomes. The methodology incorporates the most recent data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and statistical data from the National Center for Education Statistics

“The recognition is a testament to the quality training students receive from our faculty, who share their research and teaching expertise,” Cook said. “We strive to meet graduate students’ unique education needs, many of whom are adult learners working full-time and balancing various life demands. Our program is also committed to training students to develop multicultural competency and social justice advocacy skills. A focus on these competencies is interwoven in all of our coursework to ensure students best meet the unique needs and strengths of the children and families they will serve.”

This is not the first time the online master’s program in school counseling has been recognized as one of the nation’s best. AffordableColleges.com ranked the program No. 4 on its 2018 list of the most affordable online master’s programs in educational counseling, and BestColleges.com ranked the program No. 15 on its Best Online Master’s in School Counseling in 2018 list.

This is the second online program in the College of Education and Human Development’s Counseling and School Psychology Department to earn high rankings this fall. SR Education Group ranked UMass Boston’s online master’s program in mental health counseling No. 2 on its list of 2019 Best Online Colleges for Master's in Counseling because of salary potential and tuition rates. The list appears on guidetoonlineschools.com.

The deadline to apply for both programs is January 2.
